An important concept that dictates the orientation of structures in the body is called tensegrity. This is a structure that is made of contiguous parts that are under compression, and continuous members under tension that are not, leading to a strength of the whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Over time, movements and habits repeated often enough cause too much tension in the structure. While most stretching focuses on the muscle belly, the stupid piece of meat that acts on the fascia to cause movement, that is only one part of the structure. Myofascial stretching organizes tension throughout the entire myofascial chain to normalize the relationships within the chain, leading to a much more efficient and lasting result.
